How to Get More Water in Your Diet and Stay Hydrated this Summer

Many people don’t know how to recognize the signals that your body is dehydrated.  Your body might do some seemingly weird things when your tank is low. You might find yourself feeling hungry, or irritable on the mild end of the dehydration spectrum.  On the extreme end, you could wind up with a nasty headache and nausea and even heatstroke if it’s a hot day.

In today’s post, we’re sharing some tips to get creative and stay hydrated. Here are three good sources or water from the foods you probably already eat that will keep you hydrated.

  1. Fruit is an excellent source of water in your diet. Oranges, grapefruits, cantaloupes and most fruits are good choices. Watermelon is an excellent natural hydrator, as is coconut water.

If you are diabetic, be aware that some fruits have higher sugar content than others and some fruits may be a better choice than others for that reason.

  1. Vegetables are another great source of additional water in your diet. Especially good choices are celery, cucumbers, green peppers, romaine lettuce and tomatoes. Veggies are perhaps a better choice than fruit if you are diabetic because they are low in sugar, plus you get the nutrients that your body needs.

Here are some foods and the amount of water they contain:

– 1 cup chicken noodle soup = 8 oz.

– 1 cup cooked sliced zucchini = 6 oz.

– 1 medium apple = 6 oz.

– 1 cup cantaloupe cubes = 5 oz.

– 1 cup watermelon balls = 5 oz.

– 1 cup cherry tomatoes = 5 oz.

– 1 small navel orange = 4 oz.

– 10 medium baby carrots = 3 oz.

– 1 cup raw broccoli florets = 2 oz.

  1. Coffee and tea are a great way to get plenty of water. The myth that coffee and tea dehydrate you and negates the water content has been debunked. So, go ahead and drink your favorite iced coffee or tea on a hot day to stay hydrated!
