With numerous studies coming out saying that sitting for prolonged periods of time is bad, it definitely causes some concern.
However, working eight hours and sitting the whole time doesn’t necessarily doom one to a life of back pain, cramped wrists and headaches…if you take the proper precautions.
According to the Mayo Clinic, there are certain ergonomic steps that can be taken to help ensure a comfortable and healthy day at work sitting down.
Start With A Good Chair
First, you need to have a chair that is going to support your back and hips. You’ll want to position the chair so your feet are comfortably positioned on the floor and even with your hips. Make sure to support your lower back or lumbar region with a cushion if your chair doesn’t have that support.
If you’re using a computer at your desk and frankly, you probably are, you’ll want to place the monitor right in front of you, about an arm’s length away, with the top of the screen slightly below eye level. Reduce glare and give your eyes a break by closing blinds, turning off overhead lights and position your brightest light to the side of the monitor.
Just like your grandmother always said: mind your posture and sit up straight! Position your body in front of your monitor and keyboard, keeping your thighs even with your knees and roughly the same level as your hips. When typing or leaning on your desk, keep your forearms level or tilted up slightly, don’t let them dangle.
Don’t be afraid of accessories to maximize comfort. This can include a wrist rest for use with your mouse, a headset to avoid cradling the phone between your shoulder and ear and a footrest to keep your feet flat if you’re too far off the ground to rest them comfortably.
You’ll also want to keep key objects like your mouse, telephone or papers close by. By keeping these objects within arm’s reach, you’ll avoid excess stretching that can cause additional pain. Make sure to stand up to reach anything that’s not within arm’s reach.
By taking the time to adjust your chair, positioning heavily used objects in the right spot and sitting up straight, you’ll help mitigate some of the negative effects caused by sitting all day.
